Kill The Flesh

This week in "Kill The Flesh" we studied the story of Josiah in 2 Kings 23. What stood out most to us was how deeply he mourned his sin before not only God but also the nation of Israel. Here is what we took away...

We can still learn so much about purity and revival in our everyday lives by examining Josiah’s example. If you’re serious about killing your flesh and purging sin from your life (23:1-3), then just like Josiah…

1.) Remove the physical stumbling blocks that cause you to fall (23:4).
The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel.

2.) Separate yourself from the people who constantly and proudly promote sin (23:5)
He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem—those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts.

3.) Leave the practices and parts of impurity behind forever (23:12).
He pulled down the altars the kings of Judah had erected on the roof near the upper room of Ahaz, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts of the temple of the LORD. He removed them from there, smashed them to pieces and threw the rubble into the Kidron Valley.

4.) Fill the vacuum left by sin with godly practices and priorities (23:21-23).
And the king commanded all the people, saying, Keep the Passover unto the Lord your God, as it is written in the book of this covenant.
Surely there was not held such a Passover from the days of the judges that judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah.
But in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, wherein this Passover was held to the Lord in Jerusalem.
